Yes, I Know What It Means To Give …
Even when I was a young believer, I know about “Giving”. I experience the Joy of giving to the Lord. No one taught me about “Giving”. No one sat down and did a Bible Study with me about “Giving”. I believe the Holy Spirit taught me … “Freely, freely received ,,, freely, freely give”.
In 1972, God led me to sign a six years contract with the RSAF (Republic of Singapore Airforce) as a Technician – This will be another story for another day.
In the Singapore Airforce, I was introduced to a Christian Organization called the “Navigators”. It was with the “Navigators” that I grew in my Christian faith. I learn how to read and study the Bible. I learn to pray and witness for the Lord. God was shaping me for His purpose for my Life.
Through the “Navigators”, God taught me about having a “World Vision” and about the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28: 19,20.
During the 70’s, the major themes were “Making Disciples”, “The Great Commission”, “World Vision”. These themes are still very much in my mind and in my heart. I am called to be a Catalyst in the “Marketplace Transformation” Movement of the Holy Spirit.
During those days, Singapore Navigators were sending out missionaries into all the World. Into Japan, into Taiwan, into Indonesia, into India, into China … I was giving to many of these missionaries as senders.
I Learn To Give With the “Little” I have
As a Technician, I don’t earn a great deal of money.
I remember receiving my first pay of S$90. I brought this S$90 before the Lord. I prayed “Lord, how much do You want me to Keep?” The Lord impressed upon me a certain amount and the rest were given away.
I lived a frugal life so that I could give more to the Lord and to His Mission.
I chose to stay in Camp instead of going back home … this is for ministry and also to save money. I saved the travelling expenses. I saved the food expenses – Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, I ate in the “Cook House”. Hardly did I spent money on myself because I was in the Air-Base most of the time.
I had given 80% – 90% of my pay to support missionaries during those time. I just lived on 10%. I used to keep a note book to record my monthly “Giving”. (Wish I had kept it … for rememberance) I found much inner Joy and Peace in Giving. I experienced what the Bible says “It is more blessed to give than to receive”.
I Learn To Give My “All”
After serving the Lord in the Air-force for six years, I came out. I was given a gratuity of S$10,000 for my service. Wow! I had S$10,000 in my bank account.
How did I used this S$10,000? … I gave it away!
This was not something that the Lord had asked me to do or impressed upon me to do. It was my own conscious choice to give it away.
The Rich Young Ruler was given a choice by Jesus – “Sell all you have and follow Me”. The Rich Young Ruler chose Wealth over Jesus. I just wanted to do what the Rich Young Ruler failed to do.
Where did I gave the Money? … I gave it to the Church Building Fund. The Church was asking for contributions and personal loans. I wrote a cheque and put it into the Offering bag. (I did not share this account publicly – until now)
I Learn To Give Even When I Can’t Afford To Give
My wife was an Insurance Agent. During those Booming Days, when Insurance Policies were promising high “Returns” for their investments … my wife sold quite a number of these policies to her friends. Many used their CPF (Central Provident Fund) money to buy the policies.
When the “Financial Crisis Hits” because of the Lehman Brothers … huge amount of money “disappeared” over night. Insurance Companies were not spared. They could no longer pay out the high interest returns as projected. Policy Holders were to bear their loses.
A lady friend who had bought a policy from my wife was so distrauted over the Loss. She could not sleep and was full of anxiety … I was afraid for her – she will have a nervous break-down.
To salvage the situation I asked my wife to tell her that we will bear the “Loss”. We will pay her back her “loss” on a monthly instalment. When she heard this proposal, she was released of a heavy load. Her countenance changed.
We “gave” even when we could not afford to give. We were then living out of our “Saving”.
We don’t have the extra to give … yet we just have to do it.
An Appeal To Give …
Many of my peers have worked hard and accumulated wealth and assets for themselves and for their families. Praise the Lord!
I have accumulated “Nothing” except a HDB Flat …haha.
“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content…”
“Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds in your account …”
My appeal is not for “Donations” to my personal need … but my appeal is for “Participation” in Transforming the Marketplace.
Gideon’s Army was 300 … I am asking for 3,000 Patrons to join the MBN Community.
This is a Global Community. Even a $1 monthly pledge is much appreciated.
Commit to Support MBN for 1 Year … by the end of 1 year, we will have Business Platforms that Generate Wealth – For Kingdom Advancement.
