My biggest discovery in 2015 is AD 70 !
To the Jew, their ‘Hope’ is the Coming of the Messiah and the Establishing of the Messianic Kingdom … they were not thinking of Heaven. The Disciples of Jesus’ days were thinking of ‘Ruling’ with Christ in the Messianic Kingdom here on earth and not Enjoyment in Heaven.
The Theme of the “Kingdom” runs throughout the Old and New Testaments. The Prophets predicted the Coming of the Messiah and the Messianic Kingdom. The Jews in Jesus era were looking for the Messiah. The wise men announced the birth of the Messiah; John the Baptist pointed to the Messiah and the Disciples followed Jesus as the Promised Messiah.
The Disciples were expecting the imminent manifestation of Jesus as Messiah and the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom on earth.
Matthew 24 and Luke 21, the Disciples asked “tell us when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming and the end of the age?” The Disciples were in fact asking “When will you come as the Messiah and usher in the Messianic Kingdom and the age to come?” (To the Jews, their Time Reference is “This Age” and “The Age To Come”)
Jesus asked them to looked out for the signs … and in verse 34 of Matthew Chapter 24 it said “Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place”.
The book of Revelation was written to the believers of the early Church. During that time they were under going great tribulations and suffering. Revelation was written to encourage the believers to hold on to their faith. Revelation speaks of the Messiah that will come and defeat His enemies and establish His Kingly rule. Jesus had prepared the early disciples concerning ‘these things’. Jesus told them to look out for these ‘Happenings’.
The early Christians did took heed of Jesus warning. When they saw Jerusalem surrounded by the Roman army … they fled from the city when an ‘Opportune Moment’ occurred. This was recorded by the Jewish historian Josephus.
Question: Did AD 70 fit into the description of Matthew 24 and the book of Revelation? Was AD 70 the fulfillment of Matthew 24, Revelation and the Prophecies of the Old Testament Prophets?
I am dipping my feet into the water. I am just in the shallow end … 2016 will be a year of new learning and new discoveries.
